Recap

Match Report by: Jake Ouellette.

Na Fianna fresh off a win vs the Harps in the previous week were now scheduled to play the Cu Chulainn.
Before throw in Na Fianna were seen begging every local if they knew how to play hurling as they were short a few players since Alan “the beard” Baxter, Tony “El Pesidente” Cunningham, Jim Foley and Liam Twomey were M.I.A. for Na Fianna. Lucky for them Harp star players, Magic Mike Johnson and Tiphaine Levrat came in to give them a helping hand.
As soon as the ball was thrown in by our dashing referee, Na Fianna were quick on the ball, Damian (no one can spell my surname) Conneelly was all shoulders making sure no one stood in his way and was quick to put a point over the bar. Cu Chulainn were not going to be spectators in this classic battle and it showed as they quickly responded with points of their own by David Morrow and Marty Lawless. At one moment in the first half, Cu Chulainn forward Jenn Dumais collided with the evergreen Olivier Sakr, this triggered his love for screaming French profanity in a tactic to distract the opposing team. Unfortunately that was not enough to keep the ball out as Jenn scored a goal on the following play. Stevie Owens finished off the half by putting a point over the bar himself to put the Cu Chulainn well in the lead.
The 2nd half started with Na Fianna’s game MVP Ronan Corbett continuing to pop points over the bar as if he was giving them away for free. Cu Chulainn Marty Lawless decided to go in nets in that half, which he probably regretted soon after, as Niamh Devaney and Emily Jibb were swinging at every possible ball coming their way to try and score a goal of their own up front. No goals were scored, but Marty Lawless got a huge whack on his not so funny bone by the duo. Injury timeout had to be given to make sure the goalie was alright. When play continued Cu Chulainn’s game MVP Michael “The Tipperary man” Brophy took a sideline cut and sent it sailing over the bar. It was a controversial call as nobody on the field could agree if it stayed between the bars or not. In the end the sideline cut was called good and Brophy recorded the first ever sideline cut point in the league.
The game wrapped up 1-8 (11) for Na Fianna and 4-12 (24) for Cu Chulainn. It was a tough loss for Na Fianna but as the winter league has shown us, they will comeback roaring in their next game June 18th against Cu Chulainn to decide who will be at the top of the summer season standings.
