Montreal City Blues 6-15 Goose Village Blackrocks 3-6

A Dominant second-half display saw the Montreal City Blues claim their first ever victory in the
Men’s Superleague under the lights of Trenholme Park on a warm Friday evening. The Blues built on
their four point half-time advantage and killed the game as a contest with a blistering ten minute display
just after the interval.
It was a competitive opening half with both sides creating their fair share of goal chances. Stevie Owens
was a constant menace near goal, while the Blues soon corrected some errant early shooting. I might just
skip ahead now to the second half because this reporter was only told he’d be writing about the game at
the interval!
Eventual Blues MVP Martin Bainham kicked three of the four opening points of the second half, with the
other coming from midfield stalwart Dan Robinson. The Blackrocks interesting tactic of letting Bainham
have the freedom of Trenholme wasn’t working out as the Kildare man buried two goals in quick
succession, the first of which was a powerful finish into Paddy Mahon’s bottom corner.
Stevie Owens stemmed the bleeding temporarily with a point for the Blackrocks before Damian Hanrahan
gave them some more hope with a smart finish past the deputizing John McEvoy. The relief was only
temporary however as Luke Anderson and Bainham added further points for the Blues. Ben McAuliffe
sent over his first of three booming scores from distance before new recruit Cian Darcy finished to the net
under severe pressure from the Blackrocks backline.
The Blues kept the pressure on until the final whistle with their persistent forwards eventually forcing an
error which led to a Richie Edwards point. Brian Dowling added a goal to an excellent display late on as
the Blues laid down a marker for the summer ahead.
