Coming up this Saturday, the 23rd of march at the Stinger Dome –

• 6pm – Verdun Vikings (Men’s) vs Concordia Warriors (Men’s)
• 7pm – Goose Village Blackrocks (Ladies) vs Concordia Warriors (Ladies)
• 8pm – St Henri Harps vs PSC Cu Chulainn

With just one more week of games to go, the battle is still on for both places in the men’s football finals, while ladies’ football finalists the Goose Village Blackrocks and Hurling finalists PSC Cu Chulainn look to finish their seasons on a high and set their sights on their own finals fixtures.

Our opening fixture sees the Verdun Vikings taking on the Concordia Warriors, with a place in the final calling both teams. The Vikings haven’t dropped any points since their defeat in the first game of the season, and if they can continue that form then they’ll be the first team to book their place in the finals, no matter what else happens, leaving the Warriors and the Blackrocks to fight for the second spot in the finals on the last day of the season.
If the Warriors take the points however, a far more interesting scenario opens up, with all three men’s teams coming into their last games with only a point between first and third, and everything to play for.
For the neutral, you’d hope for the high drama that a Warriors victory would bring, but the Vikings would much rather book their place early, and perhaps the Blackrocks might be tempted to root for the Vikings as well, knowing that the Warriors would then play their last game needing a victory plus overturning a score difference of at least twelve points, which is a tall order for any team.

Next the Goose Village Blackrocks and the Concordia Warriors take to the field in the ladies’ football. With the finalists decided for the winter league, this penultimate fixture gives the Blackrocks one last chance to refine their team strategies for the upcoming finals, and to work out any remaining kinks they feel they might have, and with an on form Verdun Vikings awaiting them, they will be keenly aware that they will need to give everything if they want to retain the winter superleague trophy. The Warriors might not be finalists, but with the summer season fast approaching, and the May tournament on the horizon, the players here will be looking to recentre themselves and focus on the future, and putting the Blackrocks on the back foot just before the finals would be exactly what they need to do that.
Expect a strong clash as both teams look to ready themselves for what’s to come.

And finally, we have the last Hurling fixture of the season, with PSC Cu Chulainn and the St Henri Harps facing off. St Henri may very well be feeling a little hard done by, as they’ve been denied twice already this season by PSC and their last meeting turned on the narrowest of margins – had a ball broke differently or a puc been an inch to the left we might well be billing this as the game to decide which team goes to the finals. Instead St Henri will have to content themselves with one last chance to break this hoodoo and notch a win against the team that has denied them all season.
By contrast, PSC booked their place in the final last weekend with a spirited performance against fellow finalists Na Fianna Rouges, so they will be approaching this game wanting to maximise game time for their developing players, while making sure that they don’t lose any to injury for that final. PSC players will be hoping to lift themselves here and have that momentum carry them all the way to the finals.
