Coming up this Saturday, the 26th of January at the Stinger Dome –

• 6pm – Verdun Vikings (Ladies’) vs Griffintown Gaels (Ladies’)
• 7pm – PSC Cu Chulainn vs Na Fianna Rouges
• 8pm – Goose Village Blackrocks (Men’s) vs Griffintown Gaels (Men’s)

Week three gives us a top of the table hurling clash, as well as a chance for the second placed blackrocks to move into the top slot, in the men’s football and the vikings look to extend their lead at the top of the table in ladies’ football.

First up, in ladies’ football the Vikings and Gaels will be facing off in what promises to be a fantastic display. The Vikings were in fine form last week as they brushed aside the Warriors, but they might well find the Gaels to be made of sterner stuff. The scoreline to the Gaels opening game game didn’t quite tell the whole story and with some halftime restucturing they looked very much to be like the summer superleague champions that they are. The Vikings would do well to take note of that as they hope to continue their fine run of form and move two points clear at the top of the table.

The small ball will be flying in our second fixture, as the Rouge and PSC line out for what could well be a decisive game for the Winter Superleague. Having both taken points from the St Henri Harps this is the first meeting between these sides since the Summer superleague final of 2018. The Rouge will be looking to make ammends for that day, and look to put their stamp on the game nice and early. But anyone who saw how relentless PSC were in action last weekend would know that if the Rouge expect to have thing all their own way, they’re in for a rude awakening. Both sides will have a fine mix of seasoned veterans and fresh talent, which ought to make for a fast paced display of fine hurling.

And rounding out the evening, the Blackrocks and the Gaels will hopefully show us a game to talk about on the way home. The Gaels will be going into this as the underdogs after last weeks result, but it’s early days yet and you’d want to be very wise or very foolish to write the gaels off at any point. The Blackrocks will have confidence going into this after their performance against the Vikings in week 1, but they should find a tough test awaiting them in this fixture. Victory here for the rocks will move them two points clear and with a game in hand, which would do them very nicely. But a Gaels victory makes the top of the table a very crowded spot. Either way the rest of the league will be watching this fixture intently, as it’s sure to be a cracker.

• 7pm – Concordia Warriors (Men’s) vs Griffintown Gaels (Men’s)
• 8pm – Verdun Vikings (Ladies) vs Concordia Warriors (Ladies)

Week two will see the remaining superleague teams taking to the field for the first time this year, with a return appearance from the St Henri Harps.

At 6pm we will be treated to what promises to be a fine clash between the St Henri Harps and PSC Cu Chulainn. The Harps came out swinging last weekend but couldn’t land the knock down blow on Na Fianna Rouges, and will be looking to make amends for that by putting PSC on the backfoot early, and keeping them there. But PSC Cu Chulainn, the current Summer superleague champions, will not be so easily pushed around, and with a plethora of new players eager to take to the field, they’ll be hoping to set their stall out early and make a winning start to the season.

The middle fixture will see the remaining Men’s teams face off, with Summer Superleague runners up, the Griffintown Gaels meeting the Concordia Warriors, who are back for the winter season. The Gaels had a fantastic run of form during the summer that saw them go from also-rans, to finalists, only to be pipped at the post in the end. They’ll be looking to keep that form and start their challenge for the top spot from the get go, and with new players bolstering their already formidable ranks there’s nothing to suggest they can’t do just that. With the Warriors being a winter only team, we have no summer form to look back on, but most of their returning players saw action with the Montreal City Blues this summer, and drawing on that will be vital in seeing off the Gaels. With more new recruits than any other superleague side, they’ll need the stability that only experience can bring, but it’s a heady mix, and one that could very well see them brush aside the Gaels.

And finally, the last two ladies’ teams will line up for a cracker of a game to see us home. The previous weeks clash will have set the standard for the season and both these sides are well capable of rising to that level.
The Vikings haven’t had the best run of form of late, having to go back to Winter 2017 to see the last time they lifted a trophy, but with a new captain, some old hands and a injection of fresh blood, they’re looking more than ready to challenge the other superleague teams and lift some silverware again come April. Meanwhile, They’re looking to be the first warriors team to lift a trophy in either league, and with their blend of new players with returning experienced players, they’re posed to mount a serious challenge. For both these teams the road to the finals will start here, and neither will be content to be left lagging behind.
