Week six saw the last games of the regular season play out, along with our very first Hurling final.
First up we had ladies’ football, with the Verdun Vikings facing off against the Concordia Warriors. While this was a dead rubber, the Vikings couldn’t make the finals and the Warriors were already secure, that didn’t dull the intensity of the game in the slightest, with a single point separating the sides at half time, in the second half the game began to slip away from the Vikings, as the Warriors started to turn the screws before finally running out winners by twenty-six points.
Next we had a decisive game in the Men’s football, where the Verdun Vikings needed to win by nine points of more against confirmed finalists, the Griffintown Gaels. Despite a strong start, the Gael and Vikings settled into slugging it out, trading blow for blow and by halftime while the Vikings led, they were only up by two points. As the game moved on the Vikings never really looked like being able to extend that lead, and eventually surrendered it just before the end of the game, with a last-play-of-the-match point from the Vikings sparing their blushes and ending the game as a tie. So, the Blackrocks will join the Gaels in the finals, and this game will have given them both the unenviable task of having a lot to live up to, at least in terms of entertainment.
And finally we have the Hurling finals. In a single, winner takes all, match the scene was set for an upset as Na Fianna Rouges, who have not been able to find an answer to an imperious PSC Cu Chulainn side all season, started strong. It wasn’t to be though, after weather an initial bout of pressure, PSC slotted back into the familiar rhythm that’s come to define how they play and again Na Fianna could find no response. Despite a wobbly five minutes at the start of the second half where Na Fianna grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck, it was always the Cus game to lose, and they did not oblige, finishing as comfortable winners.
And with that we’re moving into the finals week, where we will see the Men’s, Ladies’, and Camogie finals, we hope to see you there.
