Winter Superleague 2022: Week Four Results

Week four of the Superleague has left some shakeups in the table in its wake, with at least one side punching their ticket for the finals.
Starting with Ladies football, the search for the closest fought game of the season might well be over, as the Concordia Warriors and the Griffintown Gaels traded blow for blow over the course of the entire game. A cagey, tactical affair, it was seven points apiece until late in the second half when a single goal gave the Warriors the edge they needed to clinch the victory, and to keep themselves in the hunt for a place in the finals.
The middle fixture saw hurling return to the Concordia Stinger dome, with N.D.G Na Fianna Rouge lining out against PSC Cu Chulainn. With no subs available in this game, it was a contest of stamina and of game management, and PSC proved to be the finer tuned machine in that regard. Making the most of the opportunities that came their way, PSC were able to fend off several periods of intense pressure from the Rouge. Both sides will now go into the Finals on April 9th, for a winner takes all showdown.
And finally, Men’s football was the order of the day, as the Concordia Warriors and the Griffintown Gaels set up for a must-win fixture. A strong first half performance by the Warriors made it seem like it could be anybody’s game at half time, but as the second half wore on the differences between the sides became more and more apparent. The Gaels slowly started to pull away and the Warriors couldn’t find that extra gear to keep pace. With a sixteen-point lead by the end of matters to show for their efforts, the Gaels are more than likely finalists for this year’s Winter League – only a very specific set of results and an outrageous score difference could seem them dislodged now. Stranger things have happened though, so the Gaels will look to their next fixture, against the Verdun Vikings to turn this into a certainty.

MVPS:
Ladies’ football – Iliana Loupessis (Warriors), Isabelle Pharand (Gaels)
Hurling – Thomas Dayon (Na Fianna), Tony Cunningham (PSC)
Men’s Football – Julien Harwood (Gaels), Keith Pine (Warriors)

Winter Superleague 2022: Week Four

Week four of the superleague sees men and ladies football action, as well as the second game of our hurling league. All of this will be happening this Saturday, the 26th of March at the Concordia Stinger Dome, starting at 6pm.
Our opening fixture is the second game in the second round of ladies’ league, with the Griffintown Gaels looking to book their passage to the finals. A win here should secure their place beyond doubt, but the Concordia Warriors will have something to say about that. A point behind the Gaels in the table, the Warriors could put their name on a ticket to the finals with a win here too. Neither side looks like they’ll be willing to back down, which should make for a fantastic game.
In the middle we’ll have small ball action with PSC Cu Chulainn facing off against N.D.G. Na Fianna Rouges. Momentum is with PSC after their win in the opening fixture, but the Rouges aren’t down for the count just yet. A spirited performance by them here would out them back in the driving seat in time for the third and final game of the season in two weeks time.
And finally, closing out another superleague week is the second fixture of round two of the men’s league. Mirroring their male counterparts, it’ll also be the Griffintown Gaels lining out opposite the Concordia Warriors. it’s do or die for the Warriors, with such a short season they’ll need a win here to stay in contention for a place in the final. Meanwhile, the Gaels will be smelling blood in the water, knowing victory here will see them almost certainly in the finals, and perhaps with the ability to pick their opponents depending on how the rest of the games play out. There’ll be no quarter asked or given here, with so much on the line. Should make for exciting stuff!
